Get to know Simon, the Queenstown Football Club President and Dad of two players (one in the under-14s and one in the under-11s). We recently sat down to chat with him about all things football and the local community.

Is there a story behind the beginning of your involvement in the club and what led to you getting involved with it?

My oldest son started playing for the club in 2015, so naturally I became involved. However, it was really in 2022 after we’d moved back to Queenstown that I became very involved and became President of the club.

Can you share some key milestones or achievements your business has accomplished over the years?

Last year our women’s team won in the league, which was a massive achievement for the club. We have 28 teams all the way from under 6 through to adults, we have so many achievements to be proud of!

Can you share with us any significant challenges in running the club?

We’ve been lucky and I’m grateful for where we are, however, sadly this season we didn’t get enough players to create a Women’s team, which is always disappointing. There is always next year for the women’s team!

Do you have any plans for the future of the club that you can share with us?

In the junior space, we took 6-7 teams to a tournament last season down in Invercargill and about 4 of those teams won in their competitions, so that’s something we are very proud of, and we are hoping to foster more amazing results like this. In the high school space, we really hope to see more kids graduate into the men’s team and continue their involvement into adulthood. Creating a passionate community of people of all ages is very important to us.

What’s your favourite thing about being part of the Hanley’s Farm community?

While I don’t live at Hanley’s Farm personally, our Head Coach Danniel is currently building his home there and I’ve really seen what a great impact Hanley’s Farm has made building more housing to grow the community and create more teams.

Before you go, is there anything else you’d like us to share?

We’re a growing club and we are very proud of where we are at. I like to think of us as more than just a community club, we are working to foster talent and love of the sport and we really want to continue to grow. If you are interested in getting involved, we are always looking for more players.
